The Future of Medium-Density Living

The Missing Middle Vision

Western Australia’s population continues to grow. Meeting the needs of that growing population with a diverse, well-located and affordable choice in housing presents a challenge for our State.

Medium-density residential development offers a better use of limited land, compact and energy efficient design and the wide variety of choice needed to cater for future growth.  Improving the design, supply and affordability of medium-density housing in areas across the metropolitan area will be a crucial part of meeting this challenge.

Just 19 per cent of housing approvals in WA currently relate to medium density dwellings, well behind the national average of 50 per cent, with most new housing comprising traditional free-standing homes or strata-titled apartments.

This gap in our market is the missing middle.

LandCorp’s Step Up Housing Design competition sought to uncover innovative, practical and cost-effective design solutions to demonstrate what could be done in this area and encourage the development of a diverse range of clever, affordable housing solutions.

Overview & objectives

Competition Progress

In July 2016 the Step Up Housing Design competition invited Western Australian architects, designers, developers and builders to Step Up to the challenge of designing affordable, accessible and sustainable medium-density housing for tomorrow's homebuyers.

From the first stage calling for ideas through to submission of detailed designs by finalists, entries were subject to rigorous assessment by a judging panel of industry experts.

Stantons International provided probity supervision to ensure an anonymous, independent and impartial judging process.
